The Cunning Little Vixen
London Symphony Orchestra/Rattle
27—29 Jun 2019 - Barbican Hall
Janáček’s life-affirming tale of love, death and the timeless cycle of nature is the latest of Sir Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars’s acclaimed operatic concert stagings.
‘The forest was darker than night, but I felt free!’ Deep in the Moravian countryside, the young fox Sharp-ears obeys no law but her own irrepressible free spirit. The Cunning Little Vixen gives voices to humans, animals and even insects: all driven by the same unquenchable life-force.
Sir Simon Rattle loves it – and with its eternal themes, vivid characters and teeming, radiant score, it’s an opera that needs to be seen as well as heard. Following their innovative, critically acclaimed collaborations on Le Grand Macabre and Pelléas et Melisande Rattle joins forces again with director Peter Sellars to reimagine the Barbican as the Vixen’s world. With a magnificent cast, the result might well be one of the operatic occasions of the year.
